JEF7REY HILDNER is a professional architect, painter, educator, writer, and editor. In addition to producing unique
visual projects--a fusion of buildings, paintings, films, graphic art, furniture,
light fixtures, textiles, murals, and landscapes--he writes about architecture
and painting both under his own name and as poet-critic-theorist Madison
Gray. The work of HILDNER-GRAY, which includes the online enterprise www.thearchitectpainter.com (including
deep_Sight
Review), has appeared in various publications,
including Global Architect Houses ((D)Ante|TELESCOPE House), Architecture New York, Architectural
Record, Oz, ARTnews, The Christian Science Monitor, The Journal of Architectural
Education, and Frances Downing's book, Design
and the Remembrance of Place
(2000). HILDNER has also published
over 200 articles as a free-lance writer and professional journalist in areas
outside of the visual arts. During his fall 2001/spring 2002 appointment as Visiting
Professor of Architecture in the undergraduate and professional graduate programs
of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington, he taught
theory seminars on visual literacy and CINEMATECTURE® (cinema + architecture),
and also taught design studios in the integration of video and 3D computer animation,
aimed at blurring the boundaries between architecture and film. This research
provides the basis for CINEMATECT® STUDIOS (www.cinematect.com). HILDNER is now Senior
Writer for The Christian
Science Journal (e.g., Midnight
moments break into light), as well as Creative Director for The Christian
Science Journal and its sister publication the Christian
Science Sentinel. His first book, GARCHES
1 2 3 4, which is based on his article "Remembering
the Mathematics of the Ideal Villa," published by The MIT Press in the Journal of Architectural Education,
was released in November 2005 by THE ARCHITECT PAINTER
PRESS. And in March 2007, THE ARCHITECT PAINTER PRESS released PICASSO
LESSONS, HILDNERS essay celebrating the 100th anniversary of Picassos
painting "Les Demoiselles d Avignon." HILDNER currently teaches as a
part-time faculty member in the architecture program at Parsons The New School
of Design in Greenwich Village, New York City. -

Praxis—Foundations of Visual Literacy: Seminar on the emergence, evolution, and present
practicality of controlling ideas of Modern Architecture, including Abstraction,
Significant Form & Significant Space, Figure|Field, Move|Meaning, and Phenomenal
Transparency. Examines important texts associated with the intellectual construct
of twentieth-century architecture and architectural criticism, including ones
associated with revolutionary developments in painting and literary theory, especially
Analytical & Synthetic Cubism and Russian Formalism.

-
- Film Architecture|CINEMATECTURE.
Seminar on literal and metaphorical connections between architecture and
film. Significant films, such as Strike, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Metropolis,
Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, Man with the Movie Camera, Playtime, Stardust
Memories, and Blade Runner, in which architecture and urbanism are major
visual and psychological dramatis personae and/or the architecture of the visual
frame is central to a film's aesthetic structure, provide the basis for examination
of the essential problem of Story and Form. In addition to emphasis on
the interplay between action and environment and phenomena of cinematic-architectonic
space and form, the course also addresses the origins of motion in modern
art, the development of a grammar of narrative/visual devices, and parallel
developments in allied plastic arts. The course includes film viewing
(including independent and web-based films), lectures, and discussion
of readings. Students are introduced to specific software applications
as environments in which to produce and present a digital-based research
or creative project..
